Animals inside the womb

Is it true that National Geographic captured these images of different animals, while they’re inside the womb of their mothers?

Elephant
Dolphin
Dog

These images are taken from National Geographic TV-show called “Animals in the Womb” (premiered on March 2005). However, these are not real animals. Cinematographer David Barlow explains why they used silicone models and visual effects:

Using models avoids the ethical and practical issues that result from filming live animals

You can find the special effects clips and their explanations from Barlow’s website. Example about the elephant fetus model:

“Special effects shots created in various lighting styles to suit different storytelling themes.

Some of the animation content of some shots was achieved using wires. These may be visible during part or all of the clip. Use with care and be prepared to paint wires from the shot.”
